What is OLED?

Currently, the development of technology is taking place by leaps and bounds, and many consumers often have the question of what is an OLED display? In general, even in the age of technology development, confusion arises among the ordinary user. The article contains useful information about this technology and is able to answer the question - why OLED screens are better than others.

What is OLED display

OLED display became popular in 2018, especially when Apple began to implement this technology in its iPhones. Other manufacturers include OLED screens on the Huawei P20 Pro, Google Pixel 3 line and Samsung Galaxy line, although the Korean manufacturer calls its displays Super AMOLED, they are made using the same technology.

Below we will try to clarify what an OLED display is, what makes it better than other types of matrices, and tell you about the best phones.
who are already using OLED technology.

Deciphering the name OLED - into Russian you can get "organic light-emitting diode". This technology stands out from the competition for its organic material, which manufacturers place between special electrodes, and they subsequently provide current.

As a rule, one of these electrodes is transparent, so the color desired by the user may disappear and cannot be seen in the future. Such organic material is used in the mass production of displays not only for smartphones, but even televisions.

What makes OLED so good

As a rule, not only smartphones but also TVs use LCD technology. Such technology in translation will mean the liquid crystal display of the device. In LCD, crystals cannot emit all the light directly, instead, they glow through a special backlight to create the light itself. It is these crystals that form the pixels on the smartphone itself.

However, the main advantage of OLED displays is that organic diode technology emits light, which it reproduces itself. For the average user, this means that they are able to work without a backlight, thanks to the electric current. Thus, OLED displays create many factors that make the technology incredibly useful:

  1. A device with this technology can last much longer due to the fact that OLED does not use backlight;
  2. Phones and TVs can be much thinner, this is due to the fact that the display module with this technology can be many times thinner than with other technologies;
  3. OLED devices are capable of producing a higher contrast version of the image, which will naturally have a positive effect on use;
  4. Smartphones and TVs with OLED screen technology used to be quite expensive, but at the moment, due to the fact that they have begun to be used in mass production, the price is falling, which will have a good effect on the end consumer.

The emergence of this technology has had a positive impact on the entire market. OLED is used by most manufacturers of smartphones as well as TVs. For the user, everything is also fine: after all, as a result, the products became cheaper, and the quality of the devices only went up.

Are there phones with OLED displays already?

The most eminent manufacturers have already managed to switch to this technology, but so far everything is far from the use of such displays by all manufacturers. The main problem with this is that the two companies own most of the OLED technology on the market. Accordingly, they can dictate their terms and sell at whatever prices they want. Samsung and LG are two companies that have huge production of such displays.Due to this, LG has greatly increased sales of its OLED TVs, and Samsung has succeeded in the segment of smartphones with this technology. Due to this factor of a kind of "monopoly" on the market, not all companies are able to hold out.

The most popular smartphones with OLED screens:

  • Phone XS / XS Max
  • Samsung Galaxy S10
  • Huawei Mate 20 Pro
  • Meizu Pro 7
  • Motorola Moto Z2 Force Edition
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 9
  • LG V30
  • OnePlus 6T

However, Samsung has equipped its latest smartphone with a dedicated AMOLED matrix, with the Dynamic prefix. Overall, Samsung is definitely doing well in this market.

Advantages and disadvantages

OLED displays have positively impacted the consumer market by showing how beautiful a picture can be. The cheaper production of such displays allows for lower prices for smartphones. A really important factor, especially at a time when smartphones have crossed all the unthinkable frames and cost over $ 1000.

However, there is a really big drawback with OLED panels, the inability to work for a long time. According to statistics, such displays fail four or even five times faster than with LCD technology. Thanks to advances in technology, manufacturers have managed to extend the lifespan of displays, but this is far from ideal. They usually last a couple of years of use. Maybe in the future everything will get better, but so far this is an incredible disadvantage for buyers.

Prices can be considered both an advantage and a disadvantage. At the moment, the production of such technology is still expensive. However, the moment is not far off when OLED will surpass its colleagues in the shop and in this indicator.
