АSUS presented a monitor with miniLED backlight

According to Asus, the 32-inch ProArt PA32UCX is the first miniLED-backlit LCD PC monitor. It was announced at CES and is rumored to be capable of HDR playback with a peak brightness of up to 1200 cd / m2.

What is a correct HDR monitor?

HDR in the PC ecosystem is in dire straits, partly due to VESA DisplayHDR and partly due to technological reasons. This new monitor from Asus is a breakthrough into HDR territory.

Most modern PC monitors are based on IPS or VA panels with LED backlighting. The first type of panel has a low contrast ratio, typically 1000: 1, VA LCDs are slightly higher, typically 3000: 1 contrast. By using miniLEDs as direct backlight and dimming zones, the brightness can be controlled in more detail. Asus says this particular monitor has "over 1000 local dimming zones" and can reach peak brightness in excess of 1200 nits.

For designers looking for exceptional performance and color accuracy, ASUS has created the ProArt PA32UCX, an innovative 32-inch 4K miniLED display. It has over 1000 local dimming zones and supports multiple HDR formats (HDR-10, HLG).

MiniLED - and microLED backlighting as a next step still doesn't provide pixel-level control like OLEDs, but could potentially be an important step for PC monitors in general, as they lag far behind TVs in image quality. The downside is that the monitor gets quite thick.

This technology did not exist before and it took months to test various proposed solutions before we could use them, the company said.

The 32-inch ProArt PA32UCX is designed for designers and content creators. Asus added that the 3840 × 2160 LCD panel is indeed 10-bit and can reproduce 97% DCI-P3. The monitor is equipped with Thunderbolt 3, DisplayPort and three HDMI 2.0 ports. It has been calibrated at the factory to provide a response time of less than 2ms.

Asus plans to release monitor in spring 2025 year, the cost of the new item has not yet been reported, but experts have suggested that the budget monitor will definitely not be.
